In
3rd grade, students will receive about 30 minutes of homework a
night. This does not include, studying for tests, finishing special projects or
completing class work. Homework will
usually consist of a math page, history or science assignment, handwriting
page, and spelling or grammar work. Along with 30 minutes of homework, students
are also expected to read or be read to for 20 minutes every day. The goal in
third grade is to guide students in being responsible for their own homework.
Students are required to record their own homework in their assignment
books.
At
times, students may come home with more work than what may be listed in their
assignment books. The reason for this is that some students may choose not to
spend their class time wisely. It is important for students to take
responsibility for their work. In this unlikely circumstance, unfinished class
work may be sent home as homework. If a student does not understand the
work assigned in class and therefore does not complete it, I will do my best to
reteach it and the assignment will not be sent home as homework.
Homework
will be given Monday-Thursday, and very rarely over the weekend. Unless
otherwise noted, assignments will be due the following morning. I, along with
the help of student assistants, will check for homework completion. I will make
the judgment call on the following point system.
Homework
points work as follows:
2
|
Assignment
shows effort, is completed neatly, and handed in on time.
|
1
|
Assignment
is incomplete or clearly no effort is shown. Assignment is late and
returned completed next day.
|
0
|
Assignment
is missing/never handed in
late
assignment is not returned completed.
|
If a student misses an assignment, a “Missing Assignment Slip” will be sent home. If a student makes up the assignment by the following day they will be given 1 point.
These
points will be recorded and used for homework grades on report cards and to
determine monthly participation in our homework reward system-Homework Club.
Students must get 2 points for every homework assignment (with the exception of
one assignment marked with a 1) to participate. If students remain in Homework
Club all month, they will have the opportunity receive an extra surprise
incentive.
